With the demise of Sears, finding parts for my Craftsman tractor became a lot more difficult. While cutting the grass, a loud screech began under the tractor that quickly turned into violent scream and vibration of the cutting deck as the spindle died. I quickly shut off the deck and headed back to the garage as grass cutting was out of the question at this point. A quick call around locally confirmed my suspicions that finding a new mandrel would be challenging. No one had anything new so off to the internets I went. Now Sears still has an online presence but their prices are insane AND they want you to pay shipping on top of that. No thanks. A quick search on Amazon brought up this Antanker unit. IT had good reviews and came with replacement bolts. Let me tell you now, you NEED those replacement bolts because the old ones are going to shear off when you try to remove them. Save yourself the aggravation and get a spindle with the bolts. The first thing you need to do when you get this, is pump that housing full of grease. If there is any grease in it when shipped it is very little and you’ll be right back where you started – ordering another one if you don’t fill that housing with grease. Don’t believe me, take it apart and look inside. Yes, they are sealed bearings. Some people say they won’t take grease with the dust caps on, but they will. You just need to fill the cavity to force the grease into the bearing. If your worried you can also just remove the dust cap from the INSIDE of the bearing ( the part that will be inside the spindle). If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, either don’t remove the dust caps or ask a mechanic for help. With proper preparation, this is a good replacement for the OEM versions. I have been running this spindle for a few years now with no issues. In my experience, it is a very good replacement.
